Stave & Clef Woodworking is the new business venture of Matthew Shockey, a 2025 graduate of the Wood Design program at the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute in Adrian, MI. Before attending SBWI, Matt got bit by the woodworking bug through hand tool classes at Tillers International, a non-profit farm and school near his home in Kalamazoo, MI. An academic philosopher by training and profession, Matt is also writing two books, one about how love of the world develops and is sustained through immersed bodily interaction with it (of the sort experienced in woodworking), another about his experience as a student at Sam Beauford.
Matt's work is influenced most by styles and traditions whose makers emphasize the utility and natural beauty of wood simply presented, and who prize shape and proportion over overt human contrivance and ornamentation.
He is currently developing designs for instrument stands, a music stand, and a practice stool. Please contact him if interested in learning more about these designs or commissioning a piece from him.
